By: Danny Le

The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6 to April 7, 1862, and was one of the major early engagements of the American Civil War. It began when the 40,000 Confederate soldiers under the command of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston spread out nearby the woods and struck the encamped divisions of Union soldiers occupying ground near Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. Confederate had launched a surprise attack on General Ulysses S. Grant and his Union army. It took place in Southwestern Tennessee. The Union General Ulysses S. Grant send lines of troops against the tired Confederate army and so the Confederate couldn't hold their ground. This resulted in a Union Victory, but both sides had major losses, with 23000 casualties, both the North and South were shocked.
